Hooray for Big Hearts and Teamwork!

Hurricane Sandy made landfall in the United States the evening of October 29, coming ashore near Atlantic City,New Jersey, with winds of 80 mph. A full moon made high tides even higher than normal, flooding streets, shutting down public transportation and stranding many in their homes. In the aftermath of the storm, thousands of homes were flooded and destroyed, millions lost power and more than one hundred people died.

Nearly three months later, the need is still great for those whose lives were upended that night.

Thanks to the efforts of a group of Amway Independent Business Owners (IBOs) this past weekend, that need was lessened for thousands of residents of the New Jersey shore.

Bob and Sue Covino, IBOs and New Jersey residents affiliated with the MarkerMan Productions group, led efforts to secure and distribute more than $140,000 worth of cleaning products donated by the Amway Corporation. Bob shares, “Make no mistake that this was a total team effort.”

More than 120 big hearted IBOs responded to the Covino family’s request for volunteers.  Amazed and thankful for the outpouring of support, they pared the team down to 30 and set to work.  Rolling up their sleeves, they organized and bagged the Amway cleaning products.  They explained how to use the concentrated products, the benefits of the planet-positive formulas and shared information about Amway with the local people who lined up to receive a bag of cleaning supplies.

“We estimated about 3,000 families were given bundles of product,” said Bob. His daughters, Lauren Smith and Jill Mendes, also IBOs, drew in local and statewide media, including five local radio stations, and helped organize product flow, scheduling and communicating with local not-for-profits. He says, “The Facebook exposure was incredible. Literally thousands of “likes” were posted and re-posted!  Sue and I…appeared on the 5 p.m. news complete with the Amway logo, pallets of products and IBOs wearing Amway t-shirts. The exposure for all of us and, of course, Amway, was priceless.”

“I could go on and on with the humbling comments received, the accolades undeserved and, most of all, the gratifying experience of “giving back” to so many in desperate need.

The Covinos are humbled to have done this outreach and after 22 years in the Amway business, have never been prouder to say…“Yes, we are independent business owners proudly associated with the Amway Corporation! We are excited for the future and look forward to great days ahead!! Thanks for giving us the opportunity to make a difference!”
