Champaign Urbana Canteen Run
Three years ago, I was trying to think of a New Year’s Resolution that was challenging enough but felt I may succeed at. I went through all the standard ones, lose weight, eat better, join a gym but realized I have tried those and failed miserably! So why not ADD something? I decided to volunteer with the Canteen Run weekly for a year. The Canteen Run consists of an old ambulance or an old box truck owned by the Salvation Army. We load one of the trucks with around 50 sack lunches, bottled water or juice when donated, t-shirts or sweatshirts, coats, blankets, socks, underwear, hygiene packets and other items that someone may have an immediate need for. We make at least four stops around town and serve the homeless and those in need. This January I will start my third year of pretty regular (at least 45 weeks per year) Canteen Runs! Over the past year, I have been taking some men that are in a prison ministry program in my town. I have many stories of joys and heartaches. The blessings far exceed the inconveniences. Not only is this a ministry to those in need, but it has become an opportunity to witness to those that volunteer! Check out the link here… http://www.cucanteenrun.org/
Everything we give away is donated. I would encourage others to get involved in your own communities. Even though we give “stuff” away, the most important thing is building relationships with people that others would never talk to!
