Cyclists Leave Cancer in the Dust

The roaring success of the very first B Strong Ride event, a bicycle ride to leave cancer behind, could hardly be attributed to beginner’s luck. In 2011, Amway IBOs Dave and Patty Benson worked diligently with other event supporters to organize and run the first ride, raising over $273,000 – the most of any LIVESTRONG-partnered event nationwide. This year, they hope to double that number.

“The key is not so much cancer research as it is improvement of lifestyle,” says Patty, who sits on the B Strong Ride Advisory Board with her husband. “Last year, in excess of $50,000 was given to the Boulder Community Hospital Inpatient Cancer Center. They used the money to spawn the design of a new wing, which will include a courtyard for the patients to enjoy,” says Dave. “They’ll start building next year.”

Dave and Patty note that the cause has gone viral in terms of support for and involvement in the event, which is partnered with LIVESTRONG and the George Karl Foundation, founded by cancer survivor George Karl, the Denver Nuggets head coach. “The new partnership ensures more local support and greater visibility,” explains Dave.

One month before this year’s event, the number of preregistered participants exceeded the number of last year’s participants. “We have enlisted several additional families to help with this ride, which was quite easy once they understood the cause,” says Patty. “It grows and grows and grows!”
